Artist
Eja Siepman van den Berg
Sculptor Eja Siepman van den Berg (1943) studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam with Paul Grégoire and Piet Esser. She can be considered a member of the ‘Figurative Abstraction Group’. Siepman van den Berg rarely works from a live model; she usually relies on a small wax model or a few photographs. For decades, she has consistently and meticulously chosen the female nude figure as her main subject, uninfluenced by trends and styles. Marble and bronze are the materials she uses for her busts, torsos, or full-standing figures. Siepman bases her work on studied poses, such as a step or a zigzag movement in the knees and back. Sometimes there is minimal expression, while at other times there is resilience or determination. The sculpture only takes its final form in the detailing, through a series of subtle treatments of surface and plastic form. Only if the wax model is perfect, it goes to the bronze caster. All of Eja’s sculptures stand upright and reveal the almost architectural beauty of the human body.
