Inez de Brauw

Amsterdam-based visual artist Inez de Brauw (1989) studied at the HKU and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Fascinated by the representation of time-bound ideas in objects, Inez draws her inspiration from the interiors of model homes. Her framed paintings reflect the continuous migration of forms and ideas between lifestyle magazines and reality, playing with the assumption that interior photographs mirror our desires. To visualise the concept of successive and ever-changing trends, Inez employs materials and techniques such as ebru (water marbling), plaster, black threads, and lenticular lenses to create “moiré effects” (from interfering grid patterns). These contrasts and repetitions contribute to a dreamlike “mise en abyme”—where one image is embedded within another, and where historical context gives way to a sensation of drifting into contemporary commercialism. Hovering between history, kitsch, and irony, each element in De Brauw's work explores the relationship between desire and reality.
