Artist
Renée Rikkelman
From a young age, Amsterdam-based artist René Rikkelman (1959) became fascinated by drawing and painting, and he sculpted little figures out of clay. After attending art school, René worked for twelve years at an advertising and decoration studio before dedicating himself professionally to his own work as an independent artist in 1988. His sculptures are modelled in clay and then cast in bronze or plastic. They are stylised figures and portraits, often with an Asian appearance. This atmosphere, characterised by an inward-looking meditative stance, emerged during René's many travels in Asia. The portraits are anonymous and do not necessarily refer to an existing person; rather, they allude to inner peace and contentment. After casting, René finishes his sculptures himself in his studio in Amsterdam, paying great attention to the patina.
