Richard Hudson

Sculptor Richard Hudson was born in 1954 in Birmingham, in the English countryside. A childhood on a farm steeped in nature, with many walks across the countryside alongside his artist mother, instilled in Hudson an appreciation for organic forms and a fascination with the ever-changing landscapes of the world. He worked at a foundry in Spain, where he gained knowledge and skills in handling various materials and tools. Hudson's practical relationship with diverse materials—primarily steel, bronze, aluminium, marble, or wood—results in organic, polished works that are both timeless and contemporary.

His sculptures begin with an idea that unexpectedly and sometimes unwelcome appears in his imagination, characterised by abstracted, flowing, harmonious lines and human forms, inspired in part by renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi. Hudson’s smooth and sensual sculptures explore the canon of Western sculpture and redefine approaches to beauty. They pertain not only to the fields of art and art history but also to psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Hudson’s sculptures, which vary in size from miniature to monumental, employ exaggeration and even humour to conceal the underlying essences of form and beauty. His recent work, ‘Tear’, made from polished reflective steel, has been installed at The Peninsula Hotel in Istanbul (2023), Madison Square Garden in New York (2017), in the City of London (2017), and at Sotheby’s Chatsworth House in the UK (2016). Richard Hudson is self-taught and lives and works in London.
