Artist
Scarlett Hooft Graafland
The Amsterdam-based visual artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland (born 1973) creates temporary sculptures and performances, often in remote and inhospitable locations. The photographs she takes of these installations are not intended to document the process, but are the final result of each project. She travels to places on Earth where vast landscapes evoke a profound sense of space and freedom. Once she has arrived, she decides on the spot what she wants to photograph, searches for materials, and improvises with the situations she encounters. Together with the local population, she makes small, playful interventions in nature that are always reversible. She even refers to the sculptures she places in the landscape. "The landscape tells a story, and I try to get a grip on it." She has spent extended periods in places such as the high plains of Bolivia, the Canadian Arctic, Madagascar, China, Vanuatu, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.
