Artist
Pim Velthuizen
Pim Velthuizen creates digital art under the overarching title Thoughts on Compassion. His work stems from a deep fascination with timeless myths and mystical traditions – from the ancient Norse Eddas to Eastern Buddhist wisdom. By bringing these worlds together in digital form, he invites the viewer to reflect on universal themes such as wisdom, connectedness and compassion.
Using advanced digital techniques, he constructs layered compositions that are printed and finished to museum-quality standards. Each piece is meticulously crafted and rich in symbolism. Two of his works are on display at Villa Arte – both from 2023, and both captivating in their depth and complexity.

‘Connecting the Dots’ (2023)
A twig from the World Tree – the idea that everything, from the roots to the leaves, forms one whole. The World Tree is often depicted with its roots pointing upward and its leaves and branches hanging downward.
The idea of connecting the dots is also used symbolically to suggest that we can learn to see the connections between all things. That is why it is sometimes encouraged to actively seek out these connections and to learn to recognize the unity in everything. According to Eastern wisdom, experiencing this unity can inspire us to become compassionate and to follow the example of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion.
